Immunoglobulomics. During my PhD and first postdoc at the Leiden University Medical center (postdoc; 2015-2018) and Erasmus University Medical Center (PhD; 2011-2015), we studied immunoglobulin (Ig) glycosylation, at several isotypes and subclasses. We made jokes about calling it "immunoglobulomics". Now, it seems like it actually is what I do. I started at the Hecklab at Utrecht University thinking I could live without them. But these days, I get more and more excited about what we can do with Igs. The level of details we can unravel is enormous. The number of potential applications and interesting research directions is mind-blowing (sometimes almost literally: choices, choices, choices.). In a great team, we are applying a combination of top-down, middle-down, middle-up and bottom-up mass spectrometry on the variable domain of immunoglobulins, unraveling their most important features: full details of the antigen-binding areas. And the 'portfolio' of isotypes and subclasses for which we can do this is rapidly expanding. To me, that sounds like immunoglobulomics!
