WHAT: I have a calling to a life of service to others as a registered nurse. Caring for patients energizes me. HOW: My patient-centered care is informed by the following objectives: · Recognize my patients are not only those receiving medical care, but are also their families, for they too must experience the nurturing hands of a caregiver. · Provide holistic care, giving equal attention to the body, mind, soul, and spirit as each of these components function interdependently. · Deliver and promote culturally competent care, for each patient deserves to have their personal attitudes, beliefs, and customs upheld. · Remember that every patient I care for is a member of the community I live in, so any injustice I witness is injustice to my neighbor. · Embrace the ambiguity of ethical dilemmas, knowing there may not be a right or wrong answer, but there will be a best answer. · Provide words of comfort when they are needed, but I am not afraid to embrace moments of silence. · Exhibit an unbiased attitude, for I know my responsibility is to care for the patient in the here and now, regardless what their past is. · Refuel at the end of each day, being sure to take care of me, the caregiver, so I am rested to begin again tomorrow. WHERE: I am working in the PICU at Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville, FL.
