About Alyssa Thompson

Durham BSc Psychology Graduate. Studying undergraduate Psychology has helped me to develop a number of key skills. I have been able to advance my data analysis skills, becoming competent in using data analysis software, e.g, JASP. I have also been able to develop critical analysis skills and have an advanced understanding of software such as Microsoft Office. Additionally, specific modules such as Clinical and Differential Psychology, Eating Disorders, Applied Issues in Neuropsychology, Reward and Addiction and Current Issues in Mental Health have been able to advance my understanding of mental health. As a result, I have developed an in-depth understanding regarding the complexity of diagnosis, symptoms and treatment. Current Issues in Mental Health explored IAPT services specifically, as well as exploring recent approaches to treatment, e.g. Digital Therapies.I have completed training and now support people as a Crisis Volunteer for SHOUT. This volunteer post has enabled me to develop an understanding of how best to support people in a moment of crisis. I have also been able to develop several skills when connecting with individuals from various backgrounds, experiencing various situations. Most importantly, I feel this post has helped me to develop active listening skills and an understanding of a collaborative approach to navigating a crisis. For example, the importance of not offering advice or suggestions, but instead using nondirective and open language to help support individuals through their crisis. I have also developed important skills and an understanding of risk assessments, safeguarding and confidentiality. I am interested in Psychological Wellbeing Practioner roles and working within IAPT services, primarily within the North West. Moreover, I am interested in mental health support roles within charities or within NHS settings (E.g. Emergency mental health care within A&E departments).
