About Amanda Serrano

As an environmentally conscious visual artist I create organic, delicate works constructed entirely of re-cycled magazines. I transform the pages of magazines into rings to create textured sculpture, and then manipulate light to emphasize the play between the sculptural forms and the shadows they cast. Like fingerprints, each sculpture is unique. I often create works made up of multiple components, intended to be displayed and viewed together as one installation piece. Each component of the installation is experienced differently depending on where the viewer stands. The straight-on view is more ethereal affording the viewer vision of the outlines of every small circle comprising the whole. The lateral views emphasize color and three-dimensionality. Shadows emphasize an additional dimension to the work that I continue to explore and lends and organic quality, which references the source of my material. Developing eco-friendly art is very gratifying to me personally. Recycling material and incorporating these in my artwork presents an opportunity to re-evaluate my thoughts on short-lived, disposable items such as magazines and to create eco-friendly objects of beauty. The act of recycling, using material that would be discarded and turning it into something beautiful speaks to the possibility of growth and transformation within each of us.
