About Anna Martinelli

I am a researcher and teacher at Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden), affiliated as professor to the department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. I take interest in understanding the fundamental properties of already known materials, looking at local structure and dynamics, but I also work towards the design of new, better performing materials. More specifically, I study the proton transfer mechanism in diverse materials that span from pure protic ionic liquids, protic ionic liquid mixtures, and protic ionic liquids confined in nonporous domains. As for the latter, modified Nafion, cellulose nanocrystals, and nanoporous silica are central in my research. I make use of many characterisation techniques, such as (polarised) Raman spectroscopy, infrared, NMR, thermal analyses, X-ray scattering, etc. All research activities that I pursue are aimed to contribute to the challenging transition into a cleaner energy system, my hope being that proton exchange membrane fuel cells can soon be more broadly used!
