About Anne Shields

As a formerly lost and confused history major, I get it. I’m one of you - a passionate lifelong learner, infinitely curious, and a liberal arts grad. The thing about being liberally educated is, for better or worse, that we see connections between almost everything. It’s an exciting way to live but can prove miserable when it’s time to decide, and feel confident about, “what’s next” for us. What’s the right major? What career paths fit? What about mid-career? What happens after retiring? So many interests, so many options. Although it seems that these answers should come easily for folks like us, they often don’t. Luckily, for students, new grads, and boomers alike, the world is changing. Instead of straight paths and ladders, we are living in a career landscape for “off-roading” - a perfect environment for those of us with a wide range of skills and values that we don’t want to compromise. I ask “why” and “why not” about most things. As a coach, I also ask “what if.” As both a technique and a philosophy of coaching, these questions help others dig deeper, to discover what they uniquely can, and want, to contribute to the world. They also spark the imagination, pushing us to unearth and give a name to what will bring us not only a paycheck but joy and meaning. I’ve come to understand career discernment like this: by “thinking like a cubist," one can see and reconfigure one's unique, multiple facets to uncover the next steps toward a meaningful career or encore career.
