About Anthony Averbeck

Anthony Averbeck is an architect, urbanist, educator, and researcher whose work lies at the intersection of housing, infrastructure, society, and the territory. He has taught at Northeastern University, the University of Virginia, and the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Anthony has coordinated and taught several speculative design studios examining the role of collective housing in reshaping the contemporary city, along with introductory and advanced seminars on architectural representation and media. He has also developed interdisciplinary pre-college and pre-graduate courses in foundational design thinking. He has been an invited critic at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, the University of Virginia School of Architecture, the Northeastern College of Art, Media, and Design, the Wentworth Institute of Technology, the University of Massachusett-Amherst, and James Madison University's School of Art, Design, and Art History. In addition to his teaching and research, Anthony has collaborated with internationally-recognized design and research practices in Boston, New York, Charlottesville, and Minneapolis; including Somatic Collaborative, Arctic Design Group, Leers Weinzapfel, and Bjarke Ingels Group. He holds a Master of Architecture in Urban Design with Distinction from the Harvard Graduate School of Design where he was a Dean’s Merit Scholar; a Master of Architecture from the University of Virginia where he received the Award for Academic Excellence; and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture, with High Distinction, from the University of Minnesota. He is the recipient of numerous scholarships and grants for academic merit and research scholarship, including from the Edelstein Family Foundation, the Paul and Winifred Stary Family Foundation, the Harvard Dean's Merit Scholarship Fund, the Lori Ann Pristo Award, and the Center for Global Inquiry and Innovation. His writing, research, teaching and design work is published internationally in the Harvard Urban Review, Urban Design in Dialogue, LUNCH Journal, E-Flux, and AZURE among other forums. He is co-author of the forthcoming book "Collective Living and the Architectural Imaginary" with Felipe Correa and Devin Dobrowolski.
