About Araby Smyth

I have a PhD in Human Geography and Geographic Information Science. I am highly skilled in designing and conducting generative community-based research projects focused on social and economic equity, and sharing findings with relevant stakeholders and diverse audiences. I have conducted qualitative research in Canada, Mexico and the United States since 2013. My research projects have analyzed economic development, finance, gender, labor, migration, and remittances in order to create new knowledge for social impact that includes public education initiatives and policy debates in these areas. As a feminist I bring a caring and critical praxis to all facets of my work. I understand that challenging the distinct yet intertwined systems of oppression that impact people across intersecting identities is a practice, not a singular action. It requires consistently listening to and learning from people who come from communities marginalized by unequal power relationships and working together to identify, understand, and transform structural inequalities. My independent and collaborative research has been funded by the National Science Foundation (USA) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (Canada) and I have published in top peer review academic journals as well as newspapers and websites.
