About Augustine Obeng

As a teacher candidate that completed Undergrad in Criminology and Bachelor of Education at York University, I am aware of the culturally relevant materials that need to be illustrated when teaching the curriculum documents. As a firm believer in social justice and equity for all students, I believe that literacy and numeracy are critical avenues to improve a student’s success in the educational system. I am a motivated teacher, who integrates diverse teaching styles that leads the students to develop empathy, individual accountability, and making an equal contribution within my classroom. I was fortunate to complete one of my practicums at in the Jane and finch corridor, which was a great learning ground. My initial practicum was at Shoreham Public School, where I observed the inner workings and day-to-day activities and responsibilities of a Primary School teacher. There I learned how delicate and impressionable the minds of young student learners are, and it is essential as educators that we equip them with the necessary tools that will aid them to become successful students and life long learners. These experiences helped me to acknowledge how essential it is for my colleagues and I to construct an atmosphere where judgment and blame are never placed on any individual inside or outside of the classroom. Being a visible minority who has grown up in the with in the Jane and finch community and managed to navigate through the education system, I acknowledge and give credit to the passionate teachers who were diligent in teaching me and fostering a love of learning within me.
