About Ben Freeman

Hi! I’m Ben Freeman. I create curriculum, facilitate transformative learning experiences, and convene participatory art and ritual. In shorthand: I'm an artist whose favorite medium is other people. Across the various domains of my work — group facilitation and teaching, curriculum and program design, 1:1 coaching and spiritual direction, leadership development, and intimacy direction in theater, film, and TV — I specialize in creating conditions in which people can open to their own vulnerability and creatively explore their relationships with others, themselves, and the wider world. In recent years, I have served as lead curriculum developer and facilitator for Becoming, a suite of rite of passage programs at Lab/Shul, an experimental Jewish community in New York. I have also guided ensembles of actors in creating original devised work as a teaching artist at CO/LAB Theater Group, which provides a creative and social outlet through theater arts for individuals with developmental disabilities. I have provided one-on-one wellness-focused coaching for K-12 educators through Reach University, a job-embedded university and training program for education professionals. I also served as a facilitator for Good Questions Lab, a DEI-focused initiative at Lucasfilm that equipped employees to make storytelling and business decisions informed by a critical analysis of power in the wider world. In this work, I combine the skills of curriculum and program design that shaped my work as a K-12 and university instructor, incisive and generative listening that I honed in chaplaincy and coaching training, and storytelling for social impact that I've developed over a lifetime as a theater artist and musician to design programs that advance wellness, equity, and creativity in the workplace. My own creative work includes a full-length album of original music, plus two EPs and many singles; a full-length play recently produced by The Skeleton Rep(resents), a new works development company exploring modern myth; a set of essays exploring the intersections of queer sexuality, spirituality, and attention; and various public/participatory art projects.
