In July of 2019, KL & A started Team Carbon to focus on embodied carbon in structural materials with the goal of reducing the amount of embodied carbon wherever and whenever we can. We spent a lot of time getting grounded in Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) of our buildings, and the team now has 6 engineers who are spreading the word about embodied carbon and performing LCAs on our projects. In January of 2021, I retired and now focus a lot of my time on sustainability issues and figuring out how to turn the corner on climate change. One of my goals is to work with local architects to flatten their learning curve about embodied carbon, and to help them understand how to get involved in reducing embodied carbon that currently represents about 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions (about the same as driving gasoline powered cars). In my work with architects I do a lot of research to map the global resources on how to reduce embodied carbon in architectural materials, interpret EPDs so the embodied carbon in various materials such as insulation and flooring is easier to understand, research the current materials used by the firm and search for alternates, find ways to improve specification wording to reduce embodied carbon, identify resources to better understand the chemicals used in materials and which ones need to be avoided, and finding certifications and stamps that apply to the various material categories. As a condition of providing my services, my clients agree to share anything we learn together with my other clients, hoping this will accelerate and leverage their ability to reduce embodied carbon and create a larger impact.
