About Bour Opoku

Bour Opoku (she/her)is a senior at Oberlin College pursuing a double major in Sociology, and Africana Studies, and minors in Law and Society and Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies. She grew up in Canada, Ghana, and the United States. At Oberlin, Bour has worked as an America Reads tutor, going into Oberlin City schools and teaching literacy, phonetics, and writing skills to third and fourth graders. She is also a Preventing and Responding to Sexual Harm and Misconduct Trainer for Oberlin's Title IX Office. In this position, she teaches over 100 freshmen per semester through Consent and Bystander awareness workshops and basics. Bour is also part of many student organizations such as the African Student Association, ABUSUA, Oberlin Community of Writers, and Barefoot Dialogue. Within the field of Sociology, Bour is especially interested in intersectionality and the relationship between Black people and the legal system in the United States. She hopes to be a substance abuse counselor, or a Public welfare and advocacy social worker. She expects to graduate with her Bachelors of Arts degree in May 2024. Upon graduation, Bour plans to go to graduate school to earn her Masters in Social Work.
