About Brett Cameron

I am currently the Principal at Daniel Woodward Elementary School. Woodward Elementary is a diverse school community in southeast Richmond. We are blocks away from Ironwood Plaza, multiple parks, McNair Secondary and Highway 99. Although we have a small community of learners, we are a busy school. We welcome our children to school early twice each week for our Play n' Eat program. We host a community homework club, community athletics, school sports, international students, and many different district offices. We are bustling school that strives to meet the needs of all members of our community.I was formerly the Vice Principal at Old Yale Road Elementary and Bear Creek Elementary School, in Surrey, B.C, from January 2015 - January 2019. My time at these two elementary schools provided me opportunities to work in a complex and diverse communities. These schools have large Aboriginal, Asian and South Asian populations, multi-generational families that grew up in those areas, and growing Arabic communities. Bear Creek and Old Yale Road are designated inner-city schools. Bear Creek Elementary houses a Deaf and Hard of Hearing program. In my experience as a school administrator I have found tremendous value in fostering strong relationships, building a robust and connected community and being open and consultative when making decisions. Above all, I have learned the importance of balancing student learning and safety into to my role and decision-making as a school administrator.As an educational leader, I have the opportunity to guide our school through the changes in our reporting practices and provincial curriculum, including the introduction of Applied Design, Skills and Technology. I have also lead the integration of First People's Principles of Learning and Social-Emotional Learning into school plans. I have lead staff inquiry groups in numeracy, social-emotional learning, Aboriginal education, technology, and communicating student learning.
