About Brian Ferguson

I was born in Scotland, grew up in Oregon, and went to school in Cleveland, OH (CWRU); Seattle, WA (UW); and Ann Arbor, MI (UM). I love to run, hike, read, travel, and make art! Art and engineering overlap far more than most people in either field are willing to admit; both require creativity and studious practice to master techniques. Currently, I design and test electronics for space flight missions at the Space Physics Research Laboratory at the University of Michigan. On top of my full-time engineering job, I'm also taking courses towards a master's in Space Engineering at UM part-time. I did my BSEE and MSEE at the University of Washington. I have been fortunate to develop depth and breadth in my engineering career. Immigrant life and frequent moves due to my spouse's academic career have built resiliency and given me the ability to hit the ground running wherever my career might take me. Learning new things is the best. I want to understand not only the details required for my role, but the bigger picture of the system as a whole as well. My first word was "why?" and I have never stopped asking it.While fixing and building things have been a constant in my life, helping others is my greatest joy. I have helped build a school in Tijuana, coordinated rebuilding of several shattered homes after Hurricane Katrina, and am a master of moving truck Tetris.
