Background
About Brian Stack
I am currently the Director of Innovative Projects for the New Hampshire Learning Initiative, a partner with V&S School Solutions, a company that provides support to schools and school districts in the area of competency-based learning, and an Associate for Solution Tree, an international professional development provider. These three roles allow me to work directly with educators from coast to coast in a variety of innovative ways designed to promote deeper learning for all. From 2006 to 2022, I was the principal of Sanborn Regional High School in Kingston, New Hampshire. There, I was a member of the research, design, and implementation team for my school district’s internationally recognized K–12 competency-based learning system. An educator since 2001, I was a high school mathematics teacher, curriculum director, high school administrator, and school board member in three different school districts in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. I worked as a consultant and expert coach for a number of schools, school districts, and organizations engaged in personalized and competency-based learning across the United States and beyond. I am coauthor of Breaking With Tradition: The Shift to Competency Based Learning in PLCs (2017) and Unpacking the Competency Based Classroom: Equitable, Individualized Learning in a PLC at Work® (2022), both co-authored with Jonathan Vander Els. I am a member of the New Hampshire Association of School Principals. I received the 2017 New Hampshire Secondary School Principal of the Year award from that organization. In 2010 and again in 2013 I was recognized with the Outstanding Role Model award, also from that organization. I am a strong advocate of personalized learning, competency-based learning systems, and high school redesign for the 21st century. I have presented my education reform and redesign work in workshops and conferences across the United States. Common Misspellings: Bryan Stack, Brian Stacks Expertise: Competency-based learning, personalized learning, professional learning communities (PLCs), collaborator, speaker, presenter, trainer, student-centered educator. I received my bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and mathematics education from Boston University and a master’s degree in education administration from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. I received my CAGS in educational leadership from New England College. I live with my wife, Erica, and our five children—Brady, Cameron, Liam, Owen, and Zoey—on the New Hampshire Seacoast.
