One day while sitting in my cubicle at a Fortune 500 company, I heard an interview with my favorite actor, Alan Alda on NPR’s ‘Science Friday’ and had a major “Aha” moment. For years I had been a ‘geek translator’ working in the realms of technology and cyber security, taking the left brain science of technology engineers and translating it into stories and knowledge for those at various companies. But before that, I had been an actress who did improv and wrote screenplays. But Alan was discussing the use of improv in training scientists to be better communicators and it was my two lives – the previous and the current - coming together. I knew I could take my uncanny knack of making the complex simple and use of elements of improv and coach others to do the same. After all, at heart, I am a coach and teacher. Eventually, I was training at the Alda Center at Stonybrook University, teaching public speaking in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Washington University in St Louis, coaching scientists in TEDx talks and being recommended to my first client who then had me working with one of her clients – the Chief Medical Officer at a major New York hospital.
