Background

About Bruce Grey

I am a dynamic, exuberant and pragmatic Licenced Aircraft Maintenance Engineer and holder of a Commercial Pilot’s Licence. My 28-year aviation career has encompassed both military and civil types, and in diverse operating environments. This has provided me with the skill sets required to conduct a broad spectrum of aviation practices from aircraft maintenance and instructing to aircraft servicing and personnel management. My passion for aviation extends far beyond the workplace and is my primary hobby. This is to the extent of maintaining and flying my own aircraft, being on committees for both model aircraft and GA aircraft sports clubs, designing and scratch building model jet aircraft; including the complete construction of gas turbines from drawings. I have remained abreast of current industry methods and practices by periods with a number of aviation companies; in many cases part-time and outside of the RNZAF to gain experience I required to advance my career. In my 20 year RNZAF career I gained experience on a number of aircraft types; predominantly the Agusta A109LUH, Bell 47-G and the Bell UH1/205, Hercules, Orion, Hawker Siddeley Andover and CT4 Airtrainer. Currently, as the Senior Tutor of Aircraft Systems at Massey University School of Aviation, I teach student pilots the NZ CAA Part 61 PPL, CPL, and ATPL technical syllabus; for example, covering an array of subjects from electromagnetic wave propagation and VOR to large aircraft hydraulic systems and gas turbines. Whether on the hangar floor or in the classroom, I strive to build a relaxed, professional atmosphere and yet maintain a fun learning environment. I feel as much at home in the classroom as on the hangar floor. Prior to Massey, as a Maintenance Supervisor and Deputy Hangar Manager in the Middle East, I was immersed in the day to day operations of VIP and Search and Rescue Agusta AW139 helicopters during an 8-year tenure. Duties included: Conducting all aspects of maintenance on the AW139, supervision of maintenance, personnel administration, employee assessments, disciplinary reports, aircraft and component incident reports, development of operating procedures and audit corrective action rectification. Whilst in the Middle East I was exposed to a vast array of cultures and nationalities. The experience heightened my awareness of the modern multicultural requirements of today’s workplaces; it has taught me to be adaptable, understanding and patient, and to find the common ground essential in maintaining a cohesive and motivated team.
