About Bryce Goodman

Bryce Goodman is a technologist and philosopher working at the intersection of frontier technologies and global challenges. He was the first hire and is currently Chief Strategist for the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Portfolio at the Department of Defense’s Innovation Unit (DIU), where he oversees a range of large-scale projects including the implementation of AI for humanitarian assistance and disaster response, countering human trafficking and illegal fishing, open source intelligence. He co-authored DIU's Responsible AI Guidelines, which is the first operational implementation of the DOD's AI Principles and is widely adopted both in the Federal government and industry, and is a member of both inter-agency and Department-level Responsible AI working groups. Bryce is also a venture partner at AiiM (climate-focused fund) and runs a boutique consulting business that works with leading organizations in the non-profit, commercial and public sectors to responsibly develop, deploy and govern AI and other frontier technologies. Notable clients include KKR, TPG, Google, NEC Corporation, Deloitte, LG, Citibank, Barclays, World Bank, Blackstone, United Nations, NASA, US Department of State, CIA, and the UK Cabinet Office. Previously, Bryce led the AI grants program at Oceankind (Larry Page & Lucy Southworth's oceans-focused foundation), was a Senior Contributing Scientist at the Environmental Defense Fund, and co-founded a cleantech startup that raised over $100m. Bryce's awards include Forbes 30 under 30 (Energy & Industry), Harvard Business School Best New Venture and World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer. He is a graduate of Deep Springs College, the University of Oxford (Clarendon Scholar; first class honours) and Singularity University, and holds degrees in data science, philosophy, political science and economics. He is completing a PhD in AI and Philosophy at the University of Oxford.
