My contract with Disability Rights Advocacy Service finished yesterday. It was an amazing experience and I learnt so much that I will be able to take into future roles. I thought I knew a lot about the NDIS before starting here but wow, there is just so much information that people with disabilities and their parents/carers just don’t know. I’m excited to be doing workshops around SA in the coming 18 months to help those with disabilities and their carers learn how to advocate for themselves and how to access information that seems to be public but somehow not obtainable unless you know exactly what you are looking for. I’ve had 10+ years of event management experience and nearly 2 years relocating families from all over the world to work on the Air Warfare Destroyer design and build project. I am experienced with the Microsoft Office Suite and managing/maintaining websites and have utilised social media for a number of campaigns. While working within Government in Event Management I worked on such projects as Clipsal 500 (now Superloop 500), the World Congress on IT with speakers the caliber of speakers from The Whitehouse, the FBI and the Pentagon. Prior to event management I was working on incoming and outgoing overseas missions for the Premier, Cabinet Ministers, Chief Executives and the Economic Development Board and meeting incredible people from all over the world. I consider myself a very lucky woman. It’s not every day you get to meet Donald Tsang, The Financial Secretary of Hong Kong before it reverted to Chinese rule or having the privilege of working with the Governor of South Australia (before and after his appointment). Getting to know and visit South Australian producers of extraordinary wine, food and everything in between then to working with families relocating to South Australia for the defence project, some high ranking, some not was a wonderful experience and ALL were a pleasure to work with. I also have a good, sounds knowledge of the NDIA and people with disabilities. Not only do I manage my son’s requirements, I have also assisted many other people who are new to the system register and figure out what they require as far as supports, funding and all of the paperwork involved in registering for the NDIA and see them through to completion.
