About Dave Cunning

The game of hockey has had a major influence on my life. I played the game up to the pro level - 20 years of playing took me across Canada, the US, Asia and Europe to compete in games. When my competitive playing career came to an end, I got into coaching and training. I currently hold High Performance 1 and Hockey Canada Skills Coach certifications, and formerly held BCRPA and CFES personal trainer certifications. Between the Hockey Canada Skills Academy, Okanagan Hockey School, the City of Kelowna, college hockey, local minor hockey teams, and Personal Training, I have coached and trained hockey players as young as 3, and all the way up to the elite level. I have provided placement on professional hockey teams for multiple players. My post playing career also came to include journalism. I wrote content for local and national online and printed media for a number of years, interviewing everyone from current and past NHL stars to local athletes. I also talked hockey on the radio - I was a weekly guest on AM 1150's LAN show in Kelowna, Canada and had guest appearances on Arirang Radio, in Jeju, South Korea. I’ve worked at retail hockey shops and arenas, learning everything from selling sticks and equipment to driving a zamboni and sharpening skates. I added scouting to my resume in 2015, joining the Chilliwack Chiefs (BCHL) to look after the Okanagan territory. The following year in 2016-17, I was the Kelowna Chiefs (KIJHL) strength and conditioning coach, and for 2018-19, I was named head coach of the Bantam AA Okanagan South Zone Knights. For the 2019-20 season, I was named head coach of the Victoria Racquet Club Kings Bantam Tier 1 team and scout for the Castlegar Rebels (KIJHL). I currently serve in the role of Manager of Athlete Development at BC Hockey, dipping into hockey administration. Everything in, I've been involved in the game of hockey for more than 25 years.
