Background
About David Berger
With a Master’s in Global Studies (IR & Political Science) from the Erasmus Mundus Joint Degree program, I bring over a decade of experience in international field service, project management, and NGO development. My career, including over three years with the Peace Corps in Zambia, has fostered a resilience and adaptability crucial to my current role as Advisor on Data Generation and Analysis at IWGIA. As IWGIA's Advisor on Data Generation and Analysis, I lead the strategic development and coordination of our data initiatives, with a special focus on the Indigenous Navigator (IN) project. My role encompasses managing the IN Global Data Portal, providing technical oversight, and leading a collaborative team to maintain high standards in data accessibility and quality for Indigenous Peoples worldwide. Key responsibilities include: Data Strategy & Insights: Advise IWGIA and partners on issues related to data, ensuring our approach remains responsive to current trends and aligned with Indigenous data sovereignty principles. Global Portal & IT Management: Oversee the IN Global Data Portal’s day-to-day operations, managing platform functionality, leading technical support for users, and coordinating the Portal Technical Team. Additionally, provide IT support to IWGIA staff and board, assist with website maintenance, and support overall communications infrastructure. Project Coordination & Fundraising: co-manage project activities for the EU-funded Indigenous Navigator, manage EC donor reporting, and collaborate on funding proposals to drive project sustainability and growth. Social Media & Communications: Manage IWGIA’s English-language social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Mailchimp), serve as an English-language spokesperson on Indigenous data rights, and support the development of communications that enhance our public engagement and visibility. Cross-Program Collaboration: Work closely with IWGIA’s global governance program, land defense and defenders programs to ensure data efforts are integrated with organizational goals and enhance impact across initiatives. My career has been driven by a commitment to sustainable, rights-based development. From representing U.S. interests at the U.S. Consulate General in Milan to responding to natural disasters with the American Red Cross, I have learned the power of adaptability and dedication in driving change. I am committed to data solutions that empower communities, promote human rights, and foster visibility for Indigenous voices on the global stage.
