I love doing science to unravel the stories the natural world is telling, and I love communicating these stories to engage collaborators in science for the common good. During my 12 years at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, I was privileged to work with local experts to fund science that helps solve grand challenges in global health and then to tell public stories of our partnerships to build momentum for doing more together. Most rewarding was the sense of common purpose and community from working with partners around the world and seeing the impact that comes from trusted partnerships plus science. Being a scientist lets me keep a childlike wonder, fearless in looking for patterns while humble and mindful that each apparent certainty is the next great idea waiting to take shape. Collaborating as a scientist and storyteller to give back to the world makes me more confident of dying with no regrets – and continues to make me happy until then.
