About David Drewry
David Drewry is a world leading expert on the environment and study of the polar regions. He holds a Doctorate in Geophysics from Cambridge University where he was Director of the Scott Polar Research Institute and is now Honorary Fellow at Emmanuel College. He was Director of the British Antarctic Survey, Director of Science at the UK Natural Environment Research Council and then Director-General of the British Council responsible for Britain’s cultural diplomacy around the world. For ten years he was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hull, was Vice-President of the European University Association (2009-17) and a Trustee of the Natural History Museum, London (2008-16), now Trustee Emeritus. He holds visiting Professorships at London University, Xiamen University, China and Krakow Academy, Poland. David Drewry lectures widely around the world to scientific, governmental and popular audiences on environmental and climate change issues.He has published three books and written over 100 articles in leading scientific journals (including in Nature and Science) and more popular magazines. His latest book, published by Princeton University Press,"The Land Beneath the Ice" was the Winner of the Association of American Publishers 2024 Prose category for the Earth Sciences. Professor Drewry has held numerous international positions including President of International Arctic Science Committee and Chairman of Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs. He was Vice-President of Royal Geographical Society (RGS) and member of UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. He is currently Chairman of South Georgia Association. He holds Honorary Degrees from several British universities; was awarded the Polar Medal, United States Antarctic Service Medal, Prix de la Belgica Gold Medal of the Belgian Academy of Sciences and Patron’s Gold Medal of the RGS.
