I believe that confidence, many times outweighs any instructional strategy. I also believe in pushing students further than they think they can go while nurturing their successes. I’ve established a human connection with my students, they know I care about and believe in them and are more likely to be receptive when I make that push. Many students I work with have historically negative relationships with education, specifically reading, math and speaking out loud. These are major challenges of special education that need to be completely disentangled and reframed. Our students are wonderful humans, who have so much to offer classrooms. They have so many existing strengths that when tapped into, can lead to successes beyond expectations. There's really nothing better than being an observer to a student overcoming a barrier.
