About Debra Bell

Building relationships among students, families, and educators is key to unlocking the potential of students with special needs. Throughout my career in special education, I have created an environment in schools that allows students to become proficient in academics and their personal lives. Parents are more aware than ever of the services available to students, and striking the proper balance of support with the least amount of restriction helps students thrive. The process improvements I have made have had tangible results. Change management and organizational streamlining are key implements in my toolbox. My success is incumbent upon building relationships, understanding students and their backgrounds, and supporting teachers with appropriate resources. Those who work with me see I have the ability to work with diverse individuals, allowing me to navigate large school districts and achieve great success. The urban setting in which I have spent the lion’s share of my career presents challenges many educational arenas do not, and I have achieved great results there because of my willingness to use unorthodox methods and thought processes. Resources are tight in education, all the more so in urban districts, and I have learned to balance student needs and district resources. As a leader, I seek to serve as a model and step back to allow staff members do what they need to do. I am always willing to lend support; communication is imperative to shared success. My professional development, as well as the on-the-job learning I’ve had regarding IEPs, the laws regarding them, and what students need to flourish, makes me a knowledgeable resource. I am fluent in ASL, which allows me to connect with a broad audience. I relish the opportunity to effect change such that teachers and students benefit from teacher experience, and I am eager to make education better.
