Background
About Defne Oruc
I'm a versatile researcher with an MA in History of Art from UCL and a background in art-making. I'm interested in contextualising contemporary artistic practices dealing with state violence, the legacies of colonialism in Latin American art, and feminist art criticism. I delivered the opening presentation for the 2022 Intercollegiate Art History Symposium at University of Chicago with my paper "Penelope in the Present," discussing the subversive potential of weaving as a form of performed thought. My work experience extends to facilitating outreach projects in educational settings as part of galleries’ public programs. I was awarded a Junior Fellowship (22-23) to assist in teaching for Extension Year students at Goldsmiths in the Fine Art Department. I mentored a cohort of 68 students helping them gain proficiency in practical art-making and critical thinking skills. Since then, I have taken on a lecturing position in Visual Cultures at LCCA.
