About Derek Barnes

Originally trained as an Electrical Engineer, I worked in the Water industry primarily focused on system controls and SCADA. About 10 years into my career I transitioned to GIS. I currently manage of the Sewer Analysis and Management System (SAMS) Program for the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority. The SAMS program includes the GIS, modeling, and database systems for the waste-water collection of 52 communities in the Boston metro area (~700 MGD). In an ESRI ArcMap environment, I have designed the the GIS model for this system from the ground up integrating both AM/FM and TV Inspection activities. I have also integrated LIDAR clouds and custom DEM and DSM creation for scenario analysis, primarily focused on hurricane preparedness and sea level rise. In addition and concurrently, I develop and support AM/FM and database solutions for PEER Engineering on an as needed basis.
