About Deryl Maxwell

Deryl Maxwell has been serving as the Principal of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church and School since 2021. Born and raised in Topeka, Kansas, he graduated from high school in 1980 before earning a Bachelor's Degree in Education with a minor in Physical Education from Concordia Teacher's College in Seward, Nebraska, in 1985. In 1996, he completed a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia University, Irvine. With 40 years of experience in Lutheran Education, Mr. Maxwell has held roles as a teacher, coach, athletic director, assistant principal, and principal. Beyond his responsibilities at Mt. Calvary, he contributes to the Lutheran education community through various roles, including serving on the Lutheran Education Association Board of Directors, as a WASC/National Lutheran Schools Accreditation Consultant, a member of the Innovative Schools Think Tank for the Pacific Southwest District (PSD), and as Region 4 co-chair for the PSD. Deryl is married to Susan, who dedicated 35 years to teaching in Lutheran schools. They have two children: Joe, an engineer, married to Cassidy, with a daughter, Ruby; and Liz, a 4th-grade teacher at Portland Christian School, married to Kevin Hohnstadt, the lead pastor at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Happy Valley, Oregon. Liz and Kevin have three daughters: Charlotte, Lucille, and Margaret. Affectionately known as “Girl Gramps,” Mr. Maxwell is deeply committed to his family and his work in Lutheran education.
