About Diego Torricelli

I'm interested in understanding motor control principles behind coordination, and finding new therapeutic applications based on the development of wearable robots and neuroprosthetics. My research questions are: Which are the key mechanisms of human coordination? How can they be restored in people with neurological injuries? How can robotics help us in this process? My background: MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering and PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Roma TRE (Italy) in 2004 and 2009 respectively. Master’s thesis at Harvard Medical School, Boston, on human motion analysis. My PhD focused on human-machine interfaces for disabled people. In 2010 I co-founded a spin-off company for the development of innovative human-computer interfaces. I have been the scientific coordinator of different European projects (H2R, EUROBENCH, SALOEXO, EXOSAFE). I have been supervising 13 PhD theses. I have been Associate Professor at different universities: University Carlos de Madrid, San Pablo CEU University, and currently at the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid. I organised several scientific and educational events, such as the Summer School on Neurorehabilitation (SSNR), the ICNR Conference and several workshops related to muscle synergies and benchmarking. I co-authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications, and edited two books on neurorehabilitation. In 2024 I have been awarded with a Fulbrigth scholarship at the Unvierstiy of California at Irvine.
