About Doug Keating

Doug Keating, Founder, Director Backbone Schools Foundation My work has evolved over the past 25 years through engagement in the processes of human development and education in a vast array of formal and informal learning environments. During this time I have had the opportunity to work with students in every phase of the human life spectrum. Throughout my career, I have explored the interdisciplinary connections between academics and social emotional learning incorporating the arts, outdoor experiential education, and mindfulness training. I have learned that in order to attain the fullest education possible, we must be regularly engaged in experiences that serve to develop all aspects of the human being: intellect, emotions, and physical body. Over the past several years I have been working on designing an experimental learning environment that I call “The Backbone School” which incorporates best practices from a wide range of pedagogical models. Most recently I have been developing literacy initiatives for students with exceptional needs at The Tompkins Seneca Tioga BOCES in Ithaca, NY and in the preparation of elementary educators in the School of Education at the State University of New York, College at Cortland, NY.
