About Dwan Street

I am a unionist, feminist and activist. My academic background is in socio-economic research within the fishing industry. My love of rural Newfoundland and the fishing industries that have been its lifeblood stem from growing up immersed in the fishery. I come from a long lineage of inshore fish harvesters and plant workers, and appreciation of the industry, its hardships and its victories, have carried over into my academic and professional lives. My socio-economic research in fisheries has received awards to date such as the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada Masters Fellowship, as well as the Dean's Excellence Award at Memorial University. I have also participated in research projects focused in socio-economic assessment of human activities, environmental studies, mining, infrastructure and oil and gas development. My passion for fisheries and rural Newfoundland and Labrador has always led to a desire to work with and for fish harvesters and plant workers in this province. I am a proud member of FFAW-Unifor and the opportunity to be a part of the actions fighting for fair sharing of our adjacent fisheries resources and strong fisheries management is one I am always grateful for.
