About Elena Botella

I'm a writer, researcher, and strategist, interested in how power flows across our economy, and the author of the book "Delinquent: Inside America's Debt Machine" published by University of California Press in 2022. In my role at Omidyar Network, I'm working with and supporting investors, and workers with pensions, who want to use their stakes in companies to improve outcomes for people and the planet. I'm most focused on what have been traditionally called "S" issues in the ESG framework, including raising labor standards, adopting a "high road" labor model where workers have a voice, combating misinformation and promoting a healthy media ecosystem, contributing to public health, and curbing the harmful effects of corporate political spending and lobbying on democratic institutions. I'm always interested to chat with others who are passionate about these issues. I'm a Senior Contributor for Forbes; elsewhere, my work has appeared in outlets like Slate, The New Republic, The Nation, Vice, American Banker, The Charlotte Observer, Scalawag, The Outline, TalkPoverty, Business Insider, and U.S. News and World Report.
