Background

About Elizabeth Green

I am a Senior Adviser of Research and Analysis in the Office of the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment. I carry out research into environmental issues and investigations to assist the Commissioner in formulating recommendations for Parliament. I am currently co-leading a project investigating the drivers of forestry in New Zealand and the role that alternative forestry systems could play in future. Previously I was a Senior Adviser (Science and Good Practice) for the National Wilding Conifer Control Programme at Biosecurity New Zealand, Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). I worked with technical specialists and researchers to translate scientific information into practical guidance to support evidence-based decision making and operational activities. In an earlier role at MPI, I worked with marine biosecurity partnerships, collaborating with regional councils, other governmental agencies and stakeholder groups to coordinate and strengthen marine biosecurity initiatives and policy in New Zealand. I have been living in New Zealand since September 2019. My background is in conservation science and I started my career carrying out scientific research in Cambridge, UK. During this time my interests lay in environmental drivers of species populations trends, using spatially explicit data sets to analyse the relationships between population change and environmental change. I enjoy working at the science-policy interface, using scientific evidence to inform operational and policy decisions that affect the environment. I have a PhD in Conservation Science from the University of Cambridge and a first-class undergraduate degree (BSc) in Zoology from Cardiff University.
