About Ella Akkerman

Dr. Ella Akkerman is a third-generation board-certified neurologist who followed in the footsteps of her father and grandfather. She practices at VSI, a globally recognized concierge-level practice in Reston, VA where she collaborates closely with a multidisciplinary team to deliver integrated, personalized treatment plans and thoughtful, holistic care that improve outcomes and enhance quality of life. Driven to treat patients - not symptoms, Dr. Akkerman has 15+ years of experience helping patients with a broad spectrum of neurological conditions, including chronic headaches and migraines, nerve pain, balance issues, post-concussion symptoms, progressive neuropathy, movement disorders, and other general neurological concerns. Known for her patient-centered approach, she is deeply committed to empathetic care and clear, compassionate communication. She excels at helping patients understand complex neurological conditions - both the big picture and the details that matter - and actively partners with patients on their care decisions and to get them back to doing what they love. Dr. Akkerman immigrated to the United States as a teenager. She quickly learned English, was in honors classes within a year of her arrival in U.S, and went on to become a so-called Double Hoo - earning her B.S. and MD at UVA. She and her husband now live in Northern Virginia with their two children. In her free time she plays piano, sings in a chorus and at the occasional gig, hikes, and hangs with family and friends.
