Background

About Ella Newcomb

A graduate from Oberlin College with a bachelors in comparative literature who is passionate about education, dialogue, and social justice primarily around sexual and mental health. My passion for education comes from working in classrooms as a teaching assistant, a primary teacher, and a volunteer. I have always been interested in working with children, developing a strong curriculum that is interactive and based on social-emotional practices, and is accessible to students of varying learning abilities. I also have a strong passion for community support and development, through working as a dialogue facilitator and program coordinator in Barefoot Dialogue at Oberlin College and as the Chair of Community Support in Survivors of Sexual Harm and Allies (SOSHA). Using my dialogue facilitation experience, I redesigned listening sessions for SOSHA to center around vulnerability and courage and developed new programs to increase opportunities for survivor support. I believe that education and social justice are not mutually exclusive, so I hope to develop more educational opportunities for people to learn about sexualized violence, how to combat it and how to offer and receive support. In addition to working in community support, I also helped SOSHA to develop the structure of the administrative and leadership teams, develop new roles, and create visibility of the organization. I also worked on the student leadership team of Barefoot Dialogue and created programs, such as skill-oriented workshops, that drive the organization forward.
