About Emma Newby

After completing my Law Degree and LPC, I initially worked within the Costs Industry for nearly 20 years, working for both paying and receiving parties, in-house and within agencies. Highlights were working at Bindmans LLP for over 7 years, as Head of Costs and Billing (managing WIP and costing for both Legal Aid and Private Client) before joining Slater and Gordon as the Manager of their London office, heading up over 20 cost lawyers for 2.5 years. During this period I was also a Local Authority Governor acting as the finance lead, and acted as a Trustee for Lambeth Law Centre.For the past 10 years my practise area has been focused in Local Government. As Head of Legal Business and Compliance at Croydon Council I managed 2 teams, introduced a share point instructions and allocations system and a new case management system for FOI requests, as well as managing the external legal services contract. During this time I completed 2 post graduate qualifications in Legal Project Management. I was proudly voted Chair of the Women’s network, growing it’s membership to over 300 and arranging a host of networking events for residents and employees. At Royal Borough of Greenwich I oversee the operational elements of a busy in-house team of almost 50 lawyers and support staff, as well as contract management of external legal services. Focusing on change management and continuous improvement initiatives has been my greatest challenge so far. Over the pandemic period I introduced new software for electronic sealing and updated processes and procedures across the service. I enjoy collaborative working and have been engaged in a number of cross cutting initiatives such as the Future of Work group and chairing the Directorate Network. I’ve recently taken on responsibility for Democratic Services.I’ve also achieved a distinction in Level 7 Senior Management and Leadership (Masters) and am looking to complete an MBA.
