About Emmy A. Yates

I am driven by the belief that everyone should have access and opportunity to explore their urban landscapes sustainably and safely. While I am dedicated to all forms of micromobility, I have always found myself drawn to the two-wheel world of bicycles. Advocating for bicycle infrastructure and safety is necessary for improving the long-term viability of bike travel and my passion is being a part of a community that encourages and fosters accessibility for all groups. In the wheelhouse of micromobility, I received my Master's degree in urban studies from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, with a dedicated interest in urban life, multimodal transportation in urban planning and urban geography. My interest in skateboarding, skateparks and citizen-led urban planning initiatives prompted my thesis research, which was on do-it-yourself urbanism, titled:"The development of do-it-yourself skateparks in contemporary urban environments." Receiving my master’s degree helped further sharpen my writing and communication skills, but it also further enhanced my cultural competency and equity lens. In addition, I am a board member of the National DIY Skatepark, a non-profit skatepark trying to preserve the sanctity and development of skateparks in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Additionally, I am an experienced writer with a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Marquette University. I have a demonstrated history of strong arts and design background, and am skilled in photography, illustration work, public speaking, proofing and editing, as well as reporting and writing.
