About Enrique Roig

Enrique Roig is former Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (DRL) at the Department of State where he covers Western Hemisphere Affairs & Africa. Previously he served as Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary for Civilian Security, Democracy and Human Rights at the Department of State. He is a recognized leader with extensive experience managing complex foreign policy and development initiatives in 30 countries from Latin America and Caribbean, Africa, Eastern Europe, and Caucasus region. Enrique also served as Coordinator at USAID for the Central America Regional Security Initiative to address the rise in insecurity, where he received four USAID awards for outstanding leadership. He is considered an expert practitioner in implementing programs on political development, citizen security, human rights, rule of law and conflict prevention. He is a visionary and strategic executive with experience growing, mentoring, and motivating large teams of diverse professionals. He has worked with high-level U.S. and host-country government officials, Congressional staff, CSO leaders, political party representatives, and international donor agencies. Enrique also provides thought leadership on democracy and governance issues, crime and violence reduction, violent extremism prevention, and social activism as an author and frequent public speaker. Enrique has an M.A. in International Relations from American University and is fluent in English, Spanish, Catalan and proficient in French. In his free time he enjoys his family, traveling, reading good books and running.
