About Fiachra Tobin

I'm a Graduate Signaling Engineer in the Signalling, Electrical and Telecommunications Department for Iarnród Éireann/Irish Rail. I started in March 2020, just before Covid-19 but have continued working from home with no interruptions. This is my first Engineering job after graduating. My work is to implement a signalling safety system, whenever there is an alteration in the track design, ensuring that all train operations are carried out safely and smoothly at all times. My work typically involves re-wiring location cases or SEBs whenever there is an obsolete piece of equipment that needs to be removed or replaced. This could be a Signal Lamp, a set of Points or Turnout, Detection Points or CAWS connections. From this Graduate Programme, I hope to learn the working of the railway, to increase my problem solving skills, to gain knowledge of safety components and the design of signalling safety systems. I'm a graduated student of BEng (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering in Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology. From college, I have developed skills in CAD, Creo, ANSYS, Minitab, Six Sigma, Machine Design and Creative Design. I also have work experience in an industrial environment, retail and photography, where I developed skills such as operating machines at high temperatures, working in a clean environment, customer service and teamwork. I have a strong interest in railways as my family have come from railway backgrounds. Based on my interest in railways, for my final year thesis, I designed a built-in mechanical wheelchair ramp for rail vehicles.
