About Fred Massin

I am actively involved in the field of Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) research and development. My work encompasses various aspects, including algorithm maintenance, testing, and innovation. One of my key responsibilities is to ensure the optimal operation of EEW systems by employing advanced techniques and methodologies. In addition, I specialize in integrating independent early warning algorithms within a Bayesian framework, which allows for a more robust and accurate earthquake detection and warning system. This approach enables us to leverage the strengths of different algorithms and achieve higher reliability in predicting seismic ground motion. Currently, I am part of a collaborative project between the SED at ETH Zurich and the national seismic services of central America. The project aims to investigate and build a prototype EEW system for each nation in the wider region. The funding for this project is provided by The Swiss Development and Cooperation Fund, highlighting the importance and support for earthquake preparedness and safety. Our ongoing efforts in earthquake early warning for central America involve the migration of the EEW framework into SeisComP, a state-of-the-art seismic monitoring software. This migration enables us to leverage the capabilities of SeisComP in developing a robust and efficient EEW system. Overall, my work revolves around advancing EEW technology and collaborating with esteemed institutions to enhance seismic safety and early warning capabilities. By leveraging cutting-edge algorithms, collaborative partnerships, and generous funding support, we strive to create a safer and more resilient future in earthquake-prone regions.
