About Frederik van Deventer

I completed my LLB Degree at the North-West University (NWU) in 2023. My final year dissertation focused on Environmental Law, Water Law and International Law. I am currently enrolled for a master’s degree in Environmental Law at NWU. For my master’s dissertation, I will be conducting research in collaboration with the Law and Natural Sciences Faculties, respectively. The research will focus on the legal framework regulating the de-proclamation of protected areas in South Africa. Using both environmental legal aspects (such as the National Environmental Management Act, with its subsidiaries such as the Protected Areas Act, Biodiversity Act and the Mining and Petroleum Resource Development Act) and environmental impact tools (such as Environmental Impact Assessments and Biodiversity Surveys). In addition, I will be employing the inputs of environmental scientists, conservationists and ecologists. I have worked at different law firms where I gained practical legal knowledge and have learned the workings of numerous courts, including the High Court, in both Johannesburg and Pretoria. I also have experience working in conservation parks, such as the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve and Madikwe Game Reserve. In January 2023, I worked with SANParks, when kayaking the Garden Route with the aim of raising environmental awareness.
