About Gary Lee

A practicing solicitor for over 30 years, I am dedicated to protecting and vindicating basic human rights. I am a Solicitor in the Office of the General Solicitor for Minors and Wards of Court. I have been Managing Solicitor of a Community Law Centre and Principal Solicitor in a national disability organisation. I have considerable experience in Mental Health Law, Wardship and Disability Law. I regularly advocate before the High Court in wardship and inherent jurisdiction cases. I have been a Chairperson of Mental Health Tribunals for 18 years (the tribunals review the detention of those detained involuntarily under the Mental Health Act). I was a member of the Law Society Taskforce on Mental Health Law and Capacity. I also served on the CCBE (Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe) Human Rights Committee following nomination by the Law Society of Ireland and The Bar of Ireland. I am an elected member of the Council of the Law Society since 2019 and I chaired the Law Society's Human Rights and Equality Committee from 2021 to 2024. I sit on the Regulation of Practice Committee which polices the solicitors' profession compliance with regulations. I am the immediate past Chairperson of the Disability Federation of Ireland. I have been appointed by Government Ministers to a number of bodies including the National Disability Strategy Implementation Group, The Disability Stakeholders Group, the Government Value for Money review of Disability Services working group and the Government Taskforce on Personalised Budgets. I am a member of the editorial board of the Law Society Gazette. I have a Bachelor of Civil Law degree from University College Dublin. I have lectured extensively in law, governance and disability policy. I was awarded a First Class Honours Masters Degree in Management by Dublin City University, the Dissertation for which I researched the effects of austerity on third sector management.
