About Giulia Core

Reaching out towards the others, coupled with a passion for science and technology that I fostered since I was in school, is a pillar of my professional life. Biomedical Engineering combines my technical skills with the most basic of human needs – health. With a PhD in Biomedical Engineering, I am pursuing my dream to positively impact human welfare and to actively contribute to the process of building affordable health. Through my PhD, I am trying to develop a point-of-care molecular diagnostic test for infectious diseases that can be used in adverse environmental conditions, where the lack of energy and high temperatures can affect the final results. This research aims at overcoming the barriers surrounding the identification of infectious disease reservoirs in rural areas that still represent a social and economic burden. I have volunteered in a variety of associations. These include the House of Women in Milan and several youth centres in challenging communities. Such experiences have nourished my innate attention to others and my strong curiosity in understanding deeply the people and cultures I interact with. I understood that creating inclusive environments that promote diversity is fundamental to find solutions that lead to real improvements in people’s lives. Leading up to my PhD, I have obtained a double-degree master of science at Lund University (Sweden) and Politecnico di Milano (Italy). Through this, I developed an international outlook and I built up my confidence in working in multidisciplinary teams. I work well in groups and I can clearly communicate my results and meet deadlines, skills which were highly emphasised during my studies through many group-works and presentations. I enjoy contributing with my knowledge to solve problems and my eagerness to find new solutions has driven me to a patent publication (Feb 2020) and one of the largest conferences about microfluidics (μTAS 2018), already during my Master’s Degree. Through all these experiences, I have seen the great impact that technology has in simplifying procedures, alleviating health burdens and aiding research. I strongly believe that affordable diagnostics have a massive potential to assist disadvantaged communities and to make easier diseases monitoring on a large scale. I wish to contribute to this field and develop a new medical device. I am pursuing this goal, starting with my PhD in Biomedical Engineering.
