About Greg Billings

I am retired with 32 years experience in both the rural and urban school districts as a teacher and administrator. Post retirement, I moved to a career in prison education as "the Prison Principal" at CoreCivic in Tennessee in the Tennessee Department of Corrections School System. It has been my pleasure to return to public education in 2025 as a school administrator in the Hillsboro High School Community in Metro-Nashville Public Schools.My role at South Central Correctional Center 2018-2023 was working with incarcerated men to reduce recidivism and build better communities through adult education and career readiness.Starting my administration path at Overton HS in 2005, I later departed for my first Principal's role at Lauderdale Middle School in Ripley, TN. Later returning to Overton HS in 2010 my focus was managing and directing Shelby County's premier Optional School for the Creative and Performing Arts as Vice Principal. In 2015, I stepped into the Principal's role. This role provided many opportunities to study and improve student achievement and attendance, improve school culture and work with a very diverse student body, staff and community stakeholders. Long term goals include working in some of the most difficult schools is America as a motivational speaker for young men and women living on the edge of one bad decision. In addition, working with new teachers and providing instructional supports. Helping others grow personally and professionally has always been a passion. The pipe-line to prison is REAL. As a former "Prison Principal", I have witnessed the for profit prison model, researched the lack of education of the incarcerated and have identified the sincere need for prison reform, education and rehabilitation.It is my strong opinion and belief that struggling students and schools need the best teachers, role models, community support programs and volunteers who are committed to the youth of this country. This holds true for the current student and the incarcerated student.
