Background
About Greg Bishop
In the military, we had a saying: “Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast.” Back then, it was about staying steady under pressure and ensuring every movement was deliberate. I didn’t realize how much it would apply to software engineering until years later. But in tech, rushing leads to mistakes. Doing things right the first time saves time. I never planned to be a software engineer. But I’ve always been the person who takes things apart to see how they work and wonders how to improve them. When I left the military, I didn’t have a CS degree, just a habit of refusing to accept “I don’t know” as an answer. My first tech job was generating financial reports on the fly. I had no idea how to do it, so I read the documentation, reverse-engineered the code, and continued until I made it work. That made me realize that I could break down complex problems, even without a roadmap. For over a decade at HII/Alion, I led teams building simulation software for the U.S. Navy. One of the systems I helped design is still running years later without a single bug fix. That happened because we put in the work upfront by automating testing and writing solid code to ensure it would last. Now, at Parsons Corp, I replace outdated systems with scale ones. I’ve designed data hubs that process vast amounts of third-party data, helping cities and states manage traffic and emergency response. I’ve reworked deployment pipelines to make engineering processes run smoother. It’s not flashy work, but when it’s done right, things don’t break when people need them most. I call myself a “blue-collar coder” because I don’t care about titles or prestige; I care about building things that work. Software that ships and stays solid long after I’m gone. Outside of work, I spend time behind a camera. I used to shoot high school sports; now, I volunteer at an animal shelter, taking adoption photos. I enjoy challenges, problems that need solving, and systems that need improving. Moving forward, I want to keep honing my craft and working with teams who take pride in what they build.
