About Greg Guthrie

Greg Guthrie is the Director of the Groundwater Assessment Program at the Geological Survey of Alabama, and prior section head of the Mineral Resources Section. He previously served as president of Guthrie Environmental Services, Inc. and Vice-President of Guthrie & Associates, Inc, and is a Registered Professional Geologist, with over 30-years’ experience as a geologist, hydrologist, and environmental scientist. His primary responsibilities are advisor to the State Geologist on water-related issues in Alabama and to oversee groundwater assessment and monitoring in the state. He was directly involved in the formulation of guidelines for the implementation of the State and EPA regulations on Wellhead Protection and conducted some of the original research on indoor radon in the southeastern United States. His consulting work dealt primarily with the development of public-water supplies and the implementation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Alabama Department of Environmental Management Source Water Protection and Wellhead Protection program, and the disposal of domestic wastewater following the guidelines of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Alabama Department of Environmental Injection Well programs. This work required interactions with federal and state agencies while acting as a representative for numerous small- and mid-sized community water boards throughout Alabama. The work required frequent presentations to state and local government bodies and civic groups. Mr. Guthrie has prepared more than 50 articles, reports, book chapters, maps, guidebooks, and academic society conference papers on research topics involving groundwater resources, southern Appalachian basin development and tectonics, gold and marble deposit genesis, and pre-Jurassic basement development. His academic work has appeared in the journal Science and featured on Alabama Public Radio. He has served as a technical reviewer for the Journal of Water Policy, the Geological Society of America, and the National Science Teachers Association. He has degrees in Geology and Secondary Education, and a strong background in chemistry and mathematics. Mr. Guthrie is a Protected Vietnam-era Veteran after receiving an honorable discharge from the United States Army.
