About Helen Mandley

From an early age I became passionate about wildlife and took every opportunity to be outside investigating nature. My BSc.(Hons.) in Ecology gave me the foundational knowledge to apply to multiple water management issues in different landscapes and situations. I focused on subjects that had practical application, learning techniques to monitor and manage native flora and fauna and the fundamental ecological processes operating in freshwater systems. During my degree I focused on in situ conservation in freshwater habitats and associated species and processes. My responsibilities and activities I’ve undertaken over the last 14 years focus on protecting, restoring and enhancing freshwater habitats and their keystone species and functions in the landscape. Whilst the positions have included in-situ and ex-situ conservation, with evolving responsibilities, four themes characterise my career and broader ecological learning, notably i) stakeholder engagement and communication; ii) practical ‘on-ground’ conservation; knowledge of legislation and its application, and iv) procedures/reporting and technical skills.
