About Jake Deslauriers

I am an accomplished molecular biologist and geneticist with 8+ years of research laboratory experience, and I received my B.S. in Biology from Virginia Tech in 2017. After graduation I was accepted into NC State University's Genetics Ph.D. program, and as of June 2023 I successfully defended my Genetics Ph.D. thesis! In the Marsden Laboratory I focused on identifying the molecular mechanisms that the Cyfip2 protein uses to influence early neurodevelopment and behavior in larval zebrafish. I am highly proficient with wet lab techniques including PCR, molecular cloning (traditional, HiFi, Gateway), recombinant DNA manipulation, I-SceI/Tol2 mediated transgenesis, CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing, larval zebrafish behavioral analysis and statistical data analysis. I am also proficient with confocal microscopy, qRT-PCR, MS Office suite, Adobe Illustrator and basic image analysis (FIJI/ImageJ). I received the Golden Microscope Award for the Best Graduate Research Presentation in 2021 at the NC State Genetics Graduate Student Association Symposium, and was a Graduate Student Travel Award recipient in 2022 at both the International Behavior and Neural Genetics Society (IBANGS), and Triangle Society for Neuroscience (SfN) Meetings. I am a driven and motivated person who enjoys working on cutting-edge projects that utilize modern biotechnology to make new discoveries and promote human and environmental health.
