How I went from an engineering undergraduate unsure of my future to running my first successful business and coaching others to do the same: Throughout highschool and university I had always had the idea of running my own business but had no idea where to begin. I had done window cleaning jobs on the side with a friend of mine in high school but we were lost in terms of scaling it to anything more than some extra pocket change. In my third year studying environmental engineering at Carleton I met someone who was doing just that. He was running an extremely successful painting business with multiple employees while studying at the same time. To say I was envious is a big understatement. While unsure of what kind of CO-OP / summer job I wanted to pursue and after some lengthy chats with him understanding many of his processes I decided to apply them and combine them with my knowledge of window cleaning and other home maintenance services that I had been doing throughout highschool and on the side during my summers home from uni. With his help and the help of numerous other mentors I met through him I ran my first successful business that same summer and generated over $110K in revenue while employing students full time! Ready for more and with many lessons learned I completed my second summer of business and doubled my businesses revenue producing $220K worth of work! In my second year I completely switched my approach to the way I was running things. I hired more people, delegated more tasks and was able to completely step away from the day to day giving me a ton of free time to focus on the things I love to do. I can’t state enough how much I have learned over the last 2 years and how much they have helped me grow personally and financially. I have noted the power of utilizing and expanding my network and the contribution others who have been in similar situations can have on your success.
