Background

About James Galey

I have a combined 20-years experience in construction and the built environment, from 2002 to 2022. I left King Edward VI Grammar School, in Louth Lincs, at 16, with plenty of Bs and Cs in my GCSEs in 2002, with one thing on my mind, money! I worked for structural steel specialists Eagle Structural Ltd from then, until 2018, when I was 32, spending half of my entire life with the same company. I enjoyed my time there, on-site, and on the tools, steel erecting, cladding, and building all over the UK. Once I had young children the firm allowed me to stay mostly based in their workshop, where I ran their Paint Spray Shop for a number of years, before becoming the Welding Coordinator for the fabricating and welding Workshop. I gained welding and scaffolding tickets, CPCS plant licences, such as telehandlers and cherry picker, CSCS card, as well as first aid, asbestos awareness, and other H&S training, such as manual handling, working at heights and NDT weld theory and practice. I will always remember my time there fondly, but I knew, as I became older, that I wanted more, and felt I had more to give. You're never too old to start again! I spent 2018-2020 gaining a Distinction Grade in my HND in Construction and the Built Environment, at the Grimsby Institute which gave me the bug of study, research, and CPD. This led me to join the University of Lincoln, one year into their Construction Science and Technology BSc course, and 2020-2022 saw me achieving a strong 2.1 in this. Since these studies, I have become increasingly more interested in the invisible/underground infrastructure/utilities. as well as appreciating that the UK is an island, in a world with rising sea-levels, and varying, and extreme, weather events. Climate change crises for the UK will not be rising temperatures, it will be floods, droughts, and/or contamination of our water supply. I am so proud to have been given an opportunity with Lincolnshire County Council, to be involved in their drainage department, and I am looking forward to better understanding the County I know and love.
